Automotive Mechanic [14/09/2012]
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
This role will be responsible for the safe execution of of mechanical maintenance work according to the prescribed standards ensuring the safety of self and others.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
Maintain, conduct troubleshooting and testing of light vehicles.
Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components, using testing equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be unsafe.
Testing of components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
Test drive or examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
Repair, replace and/or adjust brakes and parking brakes.
Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems.
Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
Tear down, repair, and rebuild faulty assemblies such as power systems, steering systems, and linkages.
Other duties as instructed by the Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Minimum of a grade 12 or equivalent
- Craft certificate from a recognized institution
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
A minimum of 3 years relevant experience as a qualified Automotive Mechanic
